ARCH 301- VERTICAL HOUSING STUDIO

Finding the balance between a sense of ownership and property located outside the r1.

Site:

City Heights, San Diego, CA

Objective:

Each student was responsible for creating their own program for one housing block within the City Heights neighborhood. The only objective goal was to increase the density of one block from 100 residents (per 2020 Census), to a Manhattan level density of 400 residents per block.

Questions that arose:

How do we approach private property / ownership in the high density setting? What can we do in design to help residents feel pride in ownership, even when not in the r1? Can there be ownership in shared space?
